You don't need it if you want to use 360 wireless controllers on the 360. It's purpose is to allow you to use your 360 wireless controllers on your PC. After plugging it in and trying several times to get the controller to connect to it, I was ready to conclude that it was either defective or there were some wireless interference issues.After searching through many forums, it turns out that the gaming receiver sucks up a lot of power and your motherboard may not be able to handle it if it has a lot of other USB devices plugged in. I started up my PC with no USB devices plugged in, plugged in the gaming adapter and the controller connected. I plugged in my other devices one by one and it turned out the gaming adapter would no longer work if my LED backlit USB keyboard was plugged in (another power-hogger). The solution I found online was to plug it into an externally powered USB hub (has its own power adapter). So a monitor with USB inputs would work fine.
